For Loop Whiskey Battered Onion Rings

Loops are used to write a block of code. Loops are handy, if you want to run the same code over and over again, each time with a different value, often when working with arrays. JavaScript supports 4 different kinds of loops; for loops, for/in loops, while loops and do/while loops. The for loop is a loop is a that loops through a block of code a number of times and is ofter the tool you will us most often when creating loops. Now let’s talk about these to die for onion rings. The whiskey and sparkling water make a tempura-like batter that make these onion rings lighter and way more flavorful than the greasy ones you get at your local bar. Make these for loop whiskey battered onion rings now…. You won’t regret it!

4 large yellow onions
3 cups all-purpose flour
1.5 cups cornstarch
1/4 cup Old Bay
1.5 cups whiskey (I used Bulleit Whiskey, small batch rye)
12 oz sparkling mineral water
1 large egg
6 cups vegetable oil (more or less), for frying

Cut onions crosswise into thick slices and separate into rings. Save the small inner parts for another day.

Add 1 cup flour and 1/2 cup cornstarch to a large bowl. Dredge the rings in the flour/cornstarch mixture and let sit 30 minutes. I used a deep fryer, so my onion rings rested while my deep fryer heated up to 350 F.

When ready to fry, whisk together remaining flour, cornstarch, and Old Bay in a large bowl. In a small bowl (or large measuring cup), whisk together the beer, water, and egg. Gradually whisk the whiskey mixture to the flour mixture.


Heat your oil to medium-high heat about 350°F on a deep fry/candy thermometer. Work in batches to prevent crowding, coat the onion rings in the batter and immediately drop into the oil. I did about 6-8 onion rings at a time in my large fryer. They do NOT turn golden brown if they are too crowded!

Fry onion rings, turning once, until golden delicious brown, about 3 minutes total. Transfer cooked rings to the cooling racks set over the baking sheets, if desired. Keep the cooked warm in oven (about 200 F) while frying the remaining onion rings.

Serve immediately. I did not make a sauce for them because to me they taste delicious on their own.

Notes
  1. This makes a lot of batter and onion rings. If needed cut the recipe in half.
